The majority of people who lives in Indonesia, live a life that is attached to tradition and simplicity. Those things encourage the emergence of a genre called ‘folk’. The word ‘folk’ in Indonesia means citizen, so, literally folk music is a music that has an impression of simplicity reflected in our everyday life. This trend of music is dominate the market in recent years.
This folk genre is developing in the circle of people that love indie music, indie music comes from a word independent. So, almost all musicians that use this genre do not work with a big music label. Instead, they are the one who create it and spread it on their own. But, some famous musicians that already famous may have a quite popular music label.
If you examined it further, you will see that folk music is different from ethnic music. Even though it shares the same theme which is simplicity. Ethnic music tends to have some rules that usually sacred. On the other hand, folk music is not bound to some rules like that, so that the musician can freely express their color of music. Some songs are even sound like a scratch song, but actually pretty good.
This genre developed along with the popularity of coffee shops all over Indonesia. This music shares a feeble or melancholy vibe but also chill. That makes it perfect for a coffee shop. With that kind of song late at night. Some famous musicians for example, Danilla, Payung Teduh, Banda Neira, Dialog Dini Hari, Silampukau, Fourtwnty, and many more. They are the role models of this genre of folk music. Even Fourtwnty’s soundtrack can be heard in the famous Indonesian’s film called ‘Filosofi Kopi’ because of that, their popularity is rocketing ever since.
The popularity of this genre creates a new segment in a circle of indie music, especially the way they speak and their lifestyle. For example, for those who loves this genre will most likely to use these kinds of words, for example ‘senja’, ‘dini hari’, and ‘kopi’, and so on. Those words that often come in folk music. Some poetic lyrics. Maybe sounds a little bit ridiculous or sound like a poet, but this is the way this music works. Yes, your type of music will affect you.
